How to change COM port for a serial adapter

When to use this:

• You have a serial device (adapter) and you want it to use a specific Windows COM port
• You need to change a serial device COM port in windows 10
• My serial device requires a specific COM port to function
• You need to know how to check COM ports in Windows 10

Requirements:

Method:

1. Open Device Manager. Right-click on the Start menu and select ‘Device Manager‘

2. In Device Manager, expand the ‘Ports (COM & LPT)‘ section

3. Locate the serial device that you want to make the changes to, then right-click on it and select ‘Properties‘

4. Go to the ‘Port Settings‘ tab, and click the ‘Advanced‘ button

5. Use the ‘COM Port Number‘ drop-down menu to select the COM port you wish to use

6. Click on ‘OK’ to save changes
